Frequently Asked Questions

  • A nurse practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice nurse who combines clinical expertise with a holistic, patient-centered approach. NPs complete advanced education and training, allowing them to assess patients, make diagnoses, order and interpret tests, prescribe medications, and create individualized treatment plans. We work collaboratively with physicians, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care that addresses both mental and physical well-being.

  • The distinction lies in training and perspective. Psychiatrists are medical doctors with extensive training in medicine and mental health, able to diagnose and treat psychiatric conditions with a full range of medical interventions.

Psychiatric nurse practitioners, like myself, are advanced practice nurses with specialized expertise in mental health. Beyond assessing and treating mental health conditions, we often bring a holistic, patient-centered lens, incorporating therapy, lifestyle considerations, and support for life transitions. We can prescribe medications, provide counseling, and tailor care to each individual’s unique needs.

My approach emphasizes understanding the whole person—mind, body, and identity. As an LGBTQ+ clinician, I prioritize creating a safe, affirming space where patients can explore their mental health, identity, and life challenges without judgment.

  • Integrative psychiatry takes a holistic approach to mental health, considering the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit. It aims to minimize the use of medications when possible, opting for a balanced approach that considers the benefits and potential risks associated with medication use. It combines traditional psychiatric treatments with complementary therapies, such as nutrition, exercise, mindfulness, and other mind-body practices.

Integrative psychiatry emphasizes the importance of lifestyle modifications, including sleep, stress management, and healthy habits. It recognizes the potential benefits of evidence-based complementary approaches like acupuncture, yoga, meditation, and herbal supplements into treatment plans.
